The White House has announced that President Joe Biden is planning to visit California Thursday to meet with first responders, and state and local officials to survey the recent flood damage. A three-week series of major winter “atmospheric river” storms have hit the state, bringing with them as much rainfall as some tropical countries experience in their wet seasons. The ground was unable to soak the overwhelming rainfall, causing dangerous flash flooding and mudslides throughout the area.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security are already on the scene in California counties particularly affected by the floods and mudslides.“Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster,” the White House said in its emergency declaration.
